Wilde worked with Chloé to revamp Lagerfeld’s original design while Zhang made her own alterations to the gown, adding a long train and gold sequin detailing along the hem.
Olivia Wilde and Margaret Zhang both wore the same vintage Chloé dress to the 2023 Met Gala and took it as a compliment, with Wilde posting a side-by-side image on her Instagram Story and Zhang reposting with a celebratory message.
Fashion enthusiasts were in for a surprise when both Olivia Wilde and Margaret Zhang showed up in the same vintage Chloé dress designed by Karl Lagerfeld at the 2023 Met Gala. While Wilde wore a white floor-skimming gown, Zhang opted for a black version with a long train and gold sequin detailing along the hem. The dress featured a gold violin motif on the front and was originally designed by Lagerfeld in 1983 for Chloé. Wilde teamed up with the brand to revamp the original design by extending the hem, turning the cap sleeves into a cape, and outlining the violin shape using gold beads.
Wilde took to Instagram to share a side-by-side comparison picture of her and Zhang wearing the same dress. She captioned the picture by saying, “Great minds 😎. If you’re gonna twin with anyone, make it @margaretzhangn 😍.” Zhang reposted Wilde’s message on her own page and added, “CUE THE STRINGS 💪💪💪🎻🎻🎻.” Both women were inspired by Lagerfeld’s original design and decided to put their own spin on it.
Chloé also shared the details of the dress on their Instagram. The brand wrote, “Creative Director @GabrielaHearst lovingly reimagined the Chloé Spring-Summer 1983 ‘Angkor’ knee-length dress designed by Karl Lagerfeld as a floor-skimming gown in deadstock ivory silk cady, complete with cut-out back and short capelet, hand-embroidered cuff details, and embroidery in golden strass and tubular beads forming a trompe l’oeil image of a violin.”
While this was Wilde’s fourth time attending the Met Gala, it seemed to be Zhang’s first. However, the Vogue China editor-in-chief is sure to become a future fixture at the ball. Zhang was named the Editor-in-Chief of Vogue China in February 2021 at just 27 years old.
It’s always exciting to see how celebrities and fashion insiders interpret the same dress differently. Wilde and Zhang proved that two people can wear the same outfit and still look unique and stylish.
